Self Care – 4 Ways To Improve Your Mood

Over the past few years, the importance of mental health has become more evident and understood. We as individuals and as a society are considering more how our emotional, psychological, and social well-being can impact our lives and those around us, and this is why we are taking steps to improve these. Such issues cannot be fixed easily or overnight, but little steps can be taken to build and help improve our mental health. Doing small, continuous improvements can help us become healthier mentally in the long run. Below are five simple ways we can improve our mood on a day-to-day basis.

1) Improve our hygiene

The little habits we have been raised to do such as brushing our teeth at least twice a day, showering regularly, wearing clean clothes and getting a haircut can all contribute to improving our mood. Think about how much better you feel after a long day and you can relax and clean yourself thoroughly. Or how much more confident you feel after a fresh haircut or when you are wearing fresh molecule perfume and you are complimented for it. Little improvements and good habits when it comes to hygiene collectively come together to improve our mood in general.

2) Limit your time on the internet

For all its uses and our ever-increasing reliance on the internet, too much of it can harm our mental health. The longer we spend on social media sites such as Facebook and Instagram, the more detached we become from the real world and skewed our perception of reality becomes. Social media is great for connecting people but is certainly a source of undue pressure on people who feel compelled to keep up appearances, especially when constantly faced with near-perfect influencers. Learn to limit your time on the internet and improve your awareness of the content you are taking in.

3) Choose a healthy diet

It’s no secret that what we put into our bodies affects our physical and mental wellbeing. Consuming a lot of fatty, oily and processed foods can make us feel lethargic and put negative pressure on our bodies, whereas eating fresh, natural food is considered a natural mood enhancer. Increasing our nutritional intake through a healthy diet can be very beneficial to our overall health. Try replacing processed foods in your diet with more fresh fruits and vegetables and you’ll certainly see and feel the difference. Combine this with regular physical and mental exercise and watch your general mood improve significantly.

4) Meditate

People practice different methods of meditation, but most usually involve a deep focus in silence or with chanting. Research some of these different methods or use an app to guide you if you are new to meditation and are looking for guidance on how to start. It can help during stressful periods if you take a break and redirect your focus to something that provides you with inner peace, rather than focusing on something causing you stress.
